The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has had great success with their latest exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. Due to the popularity of the whole thing (I’ve read that it has drawn over 550,000 people and created 2 hour long line-ups), the dates have been extended until Sunday, August 7th at midnight (appropriately dramatic). The show began in May. If you are in the vicinity you should probably go, if you haven’t already. I would. Even if I already had seen it, I would go again. But since I haven’t and can’t, and won’t be able to see any of his pieces taken from all phases of his design career with my very own eyes, I have decided to make my own miniature exhibition here with pictures of my favourites of his collections. For your enjoyment.
I’m celebrating the end of June, because that means it’s almost July and that means that summer should kick in any time. And what says summer more than a super cute pair of espadrilles?? (Nothing, because everyone knows you can’t wear espadrilles in the rain and it’s not supposed to rain in the summer.) So here are my top 7 picks that are totally perfect to step out in this July to that barbeque/picnic/date/whatever you having coming up.
The resort 2012 lines have now been shown, and it looks like many designers have been inspired by a tropical surfer’s paradise. Hang 10. Some collections, like the ones at McQ, Derek Lam and Michael Kors, were a more literal translation of the theme, using form-fitting neoprene, wet-suit zippers and body conscious seam detailing. At No. 21, Balenciaga and Stella McCartney, the clothes had a sportswear ease reminiscent of surf-style (the new Hawaiian shirt), made with modern tropical prints. Bright/neon colours were popular for the season all round.
Don’t put too much effort to get dressed in the morning, cause lingerie dressing is in for this summer. Light, sheer fabrics- think chiffon, silk, satin and lace- mix and match in muted pastel shades (and whites) for a modern, romantic look. Soft silhouettes, and lingerie inspired pieces are the staples of the trend, so go for bustier tops and bralettes, silky bloomers, cute rompers and slip dresses. Look for bedroom details like kimono-sleeves, lace trims and scalloped edges. I’d go for a more polished hair/make-up look to avoid from looking too much like you just rolled out of bed.
I’m seeing a lot of inspiration from south of the border in fashion this spring/summer, and I’m liking it. Think Latin-American cowboy country. Photo-stories in magazines (Elle Italia, Vogue Australia, Velvet Italia, Vogue Germany…) are channelling this far SouthWest style, using aztec prints and jewelry, bright, vivid hues and lots of big hats (with flat wide brims, or cowboy style).
